Flamengo are closing on a deal to buy Lucas Paquetá after settling the fee with West Ham, with talks now centred on the payment schedule.
According to Globo.com, Flamengo initially proposed 36 monthly instalments, then reduced to 24, but West Ham want payment over 18 months and are refusing to move.
The English club believe the agreement is now in Flamengo’s hands. They do not intend to relax terms beyond granting an immediate release and accepting a value nearer the Brazilians’ offer. There is optimism, with only details to finalise.
The expectation is that Flamengo will yield. The club are drafting a four-year contract for Paquetá that has been set for weeks. They want him available for the Supercopa against Corinthians on Sunday at 16:00 in Brasília, and his back issue is not expected to be a problem.
Flamengo will pay 41.25 million euros, R$255.9 million, fixed, with no performance-related add-ons. Paquetá’s stance was pivotal, as he pushed for a prompt exit and had not featured recently.
A Flamengo academy graduate, Paquetá debuted for the senior side in 2016, became a regular in 2017, then joined Milan in January 2019. He later moved to Lyon before signing for West Ham in 2022.
If completed, it would be the biggest signing by a Brazilian club, surpassing Gerson’s move to Cruzeiro. Flamengo have already added two players this month, defender Vitão from Inter and goalkeeper Andrew from Gil Vicente.
