Manchester United have been watching West Ham United midfielder Matheus Fernandes ahead of a potential transfer move in the summer, according to The Athletic.

Man United want to bring two new midfielders to the Old Trafford club and could look to lure the West Ham star away from the London Stadium.

Fernandes is also reportedly on the radar of Paris Saint-Germain, and more suitors could emerge for his services should the Hammers get relegated at the end of the season.

The 21-year-old is not the top target for the Red Devils as they look to strengthen in the middle of the park, but his performances have attracted them and others.

Fernandes has impressed in 33 appearances for West Ham across all competitions this term, weighing in with four goals and three assists.

Man United could do with such a player in midfield as they prepare for life without Casemiro and potentially Manuel Ugarte.

He joined the Hammers in a £42 million from Southampton last summer and could already be on his way out even if the club retain their Premier League status.

Fernandes is likely to be open to joining a club playing in the Champions League, and the Red Devils will be playing in the elite European competition next season if they win three of their remaining five games.

West Ham are currently 17th in the table but just two points separate them from the drop zone and they need to win most of their remaining games to stay up.

Surviving the drop could boost their chances of holding on to the Portuguese international, and Hammers manager Nuno Espirito Santo will be desperate to hold on to him given what he brings to the table despite his age.
