Weverton, 38, was unveiled as Grêmio’s new goalkeeper at the Arena on Friday, signing until the end of 2028. He arrives to be first choice, aiming to plug the gap since Marcelo Grohe left in 2019.
According to Globo.com, Palmeiras released him without a fee and had sought to renew his deal by one more season, to the end of 2027. After eight seasons and 12 trophies there, he felt his cycle had finished. He praised the club’s human approach to his farewell.
He cited the club’s project and his ambition, and pointed to Fluminense’s 45-year-old Fábio as evidence that dedication sustains elite levels. He sees himself as a high-performance athlete with plenty still to give.
Since 2019, 12 players have started in goal without cementing the role. He also wants to guide younger team-mates, stressing a selfless dressing room culture.
He must be registered on the CBF’s BID before he can play. Once regularised, there is an expectation he could feature away to Guarany de Bagé on Wednesday at 21:30.
He has recovered from a minor hand fissure and has trained for almost one month, sacrificing part of his holidays. The head coach will decide on his debut, and he says he feels in good shape.
