The pressure has been building on Ryan Mason after a frustratingly inconsistent first half of the season for the Baggies, who have failed to sustain a serious push for the play-offs.

Albion went into the game against the R’s on the back of successive defeats, but George Campbell gave the hosts the lead, before Nat Phillips scored the winner after Jimmy Dunne had equalised.

Karlan Grant continues to play an important role for West Brom under Ryan Mason

Even though West Brom’s goals came from set-plays, it was a good team performance by Mason’s side, who merited the victory based on how they controlled play.

So, there were a lot of encouraging individual displays, and Karlan Grant certainly played his part in an effective showing by the Baggies.

The attacker has been a regular this season under Mason, but he has generally divided opinion, with the former Huddersfield Town man managing just two goals.

Yet, there’s no doubt that he brings a lot to the side with his pressing and work-rate down the left flank, and the fact Mason keeps picking him shows he certainly appreciates what he contributes to the team.

Grant was singled out for his performance against QPR, with his work-rate and ability to carry the ball drawing specific praise. But, that assessment divided opinion, as Albion supporters debated how well the 28-year-old played in the win, with this fan not happy with his failure to find the net...

Another Albion fan echoed those thoughts, as they questioned Grant's end product.

This fan also insists that a player in Grant's position needs to be doing more in front of goal, as he looked back at his stats across the season so far.

However, this fan agreed that Grant was a big threat, as he insists he is underappreciated by the fans.

Finally, this fan insists West Brom must try to keep Grant due to his performances, with his contract expiring in the summer.

Karlan Grant will be desperate to improve his goal return for West Brom

As mentioned, Grant is a player that Mason trusts, so he will be enjoying the responsibility he has been given by the boss this season.

However, it's easy to see why the player divides opinion, as the reality is that all attackers will be judged on goals and assists, with Grant's return of two goals and zero assists in 18 games simply not good enough.

So, until that changes, it will be used against Grant, and he will no doubt be desperate to rectify that over the coming months.

Nevertheless, there's a reason that Mason continues to pick the former Charlton man in his starting XI most weeks, and it's because Grant is an effective team player, and you can be sure his teammates appreciate the shift he puts in.

In many ways, the performance against QPR summed up Grant's season in that he did play well, but he failed to register a goal contribution.
