ChatGPT ranks the Baggies at this position in the UK's top 60 football clubs

West Brom have always been on the cusp of Premier League regularity, and they are ranked as the 22nd biggest football club in England.

The Baggies were actually a third-tier side when the top division became the Premier League in 1992, but currently hold the record for the most promotions into the top flight since, with five, a record they share with Burnley, Leicester City and Norwich City.

And even before then, post World War Two, West Brom were a staple of the top flight for over two decades before their relegation in the 1972/73 campaign.

So, when it comes to who the biggest club in the UK is, while Baggies fans will never really claim to be the best, or even in the top ten, the one-time first division champions and five-time FA Cup winners will still stake a claim to be in the high 20s, and others will perhaps feel they deserve a place in the top 20.

But does AI agree with that? Football League World has asked popular AI-based service, ChatGPT, for their opinions on who the top clubs in the UK are and, more importantly, for West Brom fans, where their club lies.

How ChatGPT ranks football clubs, and where West Brom fits into that

It's important to note that there are plenty of factors which are taken into consideration when figuring out a list like this.

When deciding who the most prominent football clubs are in the UK, ChatGPT has based its theory on a combination of historical achievements, fanbase size, financial value and generic recent performance.

The top ten are filled with the likes of Manchester United, Liverpool, Celtic and other powerhouse football clubs in the UK, but where do West Brom lie?

Well, according to ChatGPT, they sit 22nd.

A modest position for a side with plenty of history. West Brom fans will feel aggrieved that their Black Country derby rivals, Wolves, sit five places above them in 17th, but they aren't the lowest-placed major side in the Midlands, as Birmingham City sit 31st.

Why West Brom are ranked 22nd by AI in the UK's biggest football clubs

Football League World probed deeper into why West Brom were placed just outside the top 20 of ChatGPT's list of the biggest football clubs in the UK.

AI commended the club's rich history and historical achievements. The Baggies were one of the founding members of the football league, and have won the top division once, as well as the FA Cup five times and the League Cup twice.

The fanbase was also a major positive when discussing the ranking. Whilst The Hawthorns doesn't have the biggest capacity in the UK's stadiums list, AI believes that the loyalty and noise of the supporters are incredibly significant.

However, the club's current status in the Championship and the financial warnings that it brings, having outlived their recent parachute payment phase from their Premier League relegation, has them ranked below clubs who have more recent top-flight campaigns and stronger financial positions.

Nevertheless, a place just outside the top-20 isn't something to stick your nose up at if you're a West Brom fan. Being the 22nd best team in England technically means you're the second-best team in the Championship, and I'm sure Ryan Mason and co will welcome a top two finish in 2025/26.
