Why Bayern are struggling to land Luis Díaz

Bayern München have intensified negotiations to sign Luis Díaz from Liverpool, but are proceeding within clear financial limits set by the club’s supervisory board, according to FCBInside and Sport BILD. Sporting director Max Eberl has been restricted to a maximum outlay of €60 million plus performance-based bonuses for the Colombian winger, as Bayern seek to manage their summer transfer budget prudently.

Bayern launched an initial offer of €52 million for Díaz late last week, aiming to stay well within their established ceiling. Liverpool quickly dismissed the bid, as anticipated. Rather than immediately escalating their proposal, Eberl and the Bayern hierarchy are choosing a patient approach, hoping that drawn-out negotiations will avoid a bidding war and help keep costs under control.

Díaz, who has signaled openness to a move, has informed Liverpool he would consider leaving if the right offer emerges, Sky reports. Bayern have received encouraging messages from the player’s camp, and a contract proposal running until at least 2029 has already been tabled. Personal terms are not considered an obstacle in the deal.

Liverpool, however, remain adamant that Díaz is not for sale unless their conditions are met. Internally, the Merseyside club are said to value the player in the region of €100 million, a figure more reflective of his book value than the market climate. As The Athletic notes, Bayern have reportedly submitted a bid of €67.5 million for Díaz—already above the club’s stated limit, per Sport BILD.

Upon joining Liverpool from Porto in January 2022 for €55 million (including add-ons), Díaz has made a strong impression, tallying 41 goals and 23 assists in 148 appearances. Last season, under new manager Arne Slot, Díaz delivered 13 goals and seven assists in 36 Premier League games—his best English campaign to date.

In response to Liverpool’s resistance, Bayern continue to weigh alternatives for their left-sided attack. Transfers for Rodrygo (Real Madrid) and Leandro Trossard (Arsenal) are being considered, though both present financial or strategic challenges. Reports also indicate that Al Nassr from Saudi Arabia has shown interest in Díaz. Barcelona, meanwhile, are viewed as uncompetitive in this pursuit due to financial constraints, per insider Fabrizio Romano.

The landscape suggests protracted negotiations are likely if Bayern are to secure Díaz, with Liverpool firmly in control. Bayern’s disciplined approach may limit their ability to secure their primary target unless circumstances shift. The club must now decide whether to stretch their spending or pivot to alternative options should Liverpool’s asking price remain beyond reach.
