Chelsea’s fun trip the USA to play in the Club World Cup got a lot less fun with a stinging 3-1 defeat to Flamengo on Friday night.

Not only did it hurt to get outplayed so comprehensively by a team that operates on a fraction of our budget, it also has put us in a perilous position in the tournament. Even if we get through the group now, chances are that we will face Bayern Munich rather than Benfica. That’s a major blow.

The unfortunate loss has also distracted from what otherwise would be seen as the positives of the game – like Liam Delap making his debut for the club.

The striker came on as a sub in our first game, then started against the Brazilians. He didn’t do much wrong, running the channels diligently and showing his strength on some occasions. But he was really cut off by the opposition’s excellent possession play.

Delap consulted former teammate over Stamford Bridge move

Delap spoke a little about the decision to come to Chelsea, and how he had spoken to his old teammate Cole Palmer about it:

“I don’t like too much information. Ultimately, it was my decision, so I kind of just wanted my head to be clear. I spoke to him a little bit, asked him what I needed to ask him. He told me what I needed to know,” Delap said.

He seems a very sensible chap. We also think that he and Palmer could striker up an amazing understanding, just as Palmer already did with Nicolas Jackson. They just need time on the pitch together – which they’ll get with Jackson suspended for Tuesday’s game against Tunis.
