Hibernian boss David Gray has confirmed talks will take place in the summer with Sunderland over the future of Nectarios Triantis.
Hibernian boss David Gray has revealed they will speak to Sunderland about Nectarios Triantis’ future, with the Australian set to return to the Championship club in the summer as it stands.
The 21-year-old spent the second half of the previous campaign at Easter Road, and Triantis returned to Hibs for the current season.
And, like many of his teammates, Triantis has flourished under Gray, with the Edinburgh outfit having enjoyed a remarkable past few months that has seen them shoot up to third in the table, with European football a very real possibility.
Despite joining Sunderland as a centre-back, Triantis has impressed in midfield for Hibs, and his form has seen him earn a first call-up to the Australia squad for the upcoming internationals.
The youngster has brought an energy and all-action style to Hibs’ midfield, so all parties will be pleased with how the loan is playing out.
Yet, quite what the future holds for Triantis is unclear, and Gray told the Scotsman that he expects discussions to take place at the end of the season.
“He’s got really good attributes to be a really good number six and he’s demonstrating that. He’s getting better all the time. He’s still contracted to Sunderland so we’ll address that as and when.
“There will be conversations with a number of players at the end of the season. Clearly he’s contracted to Sunderland so we’ll see where that situation goes.”
You would expect Hibs to make a move to keep Triantis in Scotland on a permanent basis, as he has established himself as a key player, and is a real leader under Gray.
With that in mind, it would be no surprise if other clubs took notice, and Sunderland may feel he is ready to contribute next season, especially if they fail to win promotion and remain in the Championship.
Ultimately, Triantis is at a stage in his career where he needs to be playing, so if that game time isn’t going to come at the Stadium of Light, he would be better served to depart, and returning to Hibs is sure to appeal.
Triantis is under contract on Wearside until 2027, so Sunderland will get a fee for him if a summer switch is sorted, and it’s certain to represent a decent profit on the initial £300,000 they paid Central Coast Mariners to sign the Sydney native.
