Mbappe sat out Real Madrid’s semi-final win over Atletico Madrid
Kylian Mbappe is winning his fitness battle as Real Madrid face Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup final this weekend.
Los Blancos overcame rivals Atletico Madrid in Thursday night’s semi-final tie in Saudi Arabia. A spectacular early free-kick from Federico Valverde and a strike from Rodrygo effort in the second half was enough for a 2-1 win.
Meanwhile, Barcelona thrashed Athletic Club 5-0 in Wednesday night’s semi-final, where Hansi Flick had the luxury of resting big names such as Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Robert Lewandowski.
So, for a fourth consecutive season, the LaLiga heavyweights will renew a classic rivalry in ‘El Clasico’ for the right to clinch the Spanish Super Cup.
Barcelona emerged victorious in last season’s meeting and dominated this fixture throughout the 2024-2025 campaign en route to winning a treble.
However, in the first El Clasico of this season, Real Madrid came out on top thanks to goals from Jude Bellingham and Mbappe either side of Fermin Lopez’s equaliser at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Speaking of Mbappe, there were fears he would miss the duration of the four-team tournament with a knee sprain. The knock was sufficient enough to sideline the Frenchman against Atleti, but there is renewed optimism of an imminent return to action.
Here’s the latest on Mbappe’s injury ahead of a high-stakes Clasico showdown this weekend.
With 29 goals to his name this season, Mbappe is, unsurprisingly, key to Real Madrid’s hopes of claiming the Spanish Super Cup.
The good news for Los Blancos is the 27-year-old is ready to lead the attack against Barcelona, as revealed by head coach Xabi Alonso.
“The final will be different and Mbappe will travel tomorrow,” Alonso confirmed. “He's much better. He has trained and he feels good.
“His chances of playing are the same as for everyone in the squad.”
