Wilson Isidor has committed to represent Haiti, issuing a 148-word statement ahead of Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at St James’ Park. The player said in a message that he has accepted the call after careful consideration.
He has received a flood of appeals from supporters to join the Grenadiers and took time to make what he considered the right choice for country and team. He is proud to be selected, wants to honour the nation and looks forward to feeling the diaspora’s passion and meeting supporters.
The announcement comes as Sunderland prepare for Newcastle United on Sunday. The Black Cats were beaten 1-0 by Brighton at the Stadium of Light last weekend, former Newcastle winger Yankuba Minteh scoring.
Sunderland are managing injuries before the trip. Isidor was unavailable against Brighton due to an injury and was not risked, with the same caution applied to Brian Brobbey.
Several players are racing to be fit. Robin Roefs and Nordi Mukiele both missed the Brighton defeat but could yet return, while Reinildo Mandava is expected to train again this week. Le Bris has provided further updates on other injured players.
