Police warn as Sunderland fans to be escorted for Newcastle United derby | OneFootball

Sunderland supporters heading to Sunday’s Tyne-Wear derby at Newcastle United will be escorted from Newcastle Central Station to St James’ Park as part of a large policing and safety operation. Thousands are expected to travel for the midday kick-off. Planning has involved both clubs and regional partners.

Newcastle City Council said in a statement that the police-supported escort will leave Central Station at 10.15am, mirroring the arrangements used at December’s reverse fixture in Sunderland.

Those arriving later could face delays if further escorts are needed, and risk missing the start. Supporters are urged to reach Central Station before 10.15am, where officers and event staff will direct them to a designated gathering point.

The escort will not apply to fans on official club coaches, which will go straight to St James’ Park. Public transport will be extremely busy, with Metro and rail on a standard Sunday timetable, so allow extra time and expect queues.

Engineering works mean no direct trains to Newcastle from Durham or Darlington, with a limited rail replacement service. Road closures around Central Station, St James Boulevard and Barrack Road will support the safe arrival of away fans.

A significantly increased police presence will be in place across the city centre and around the ground. There will be zero tolerance for disorder, with action including prosecutions, football banning orders and potential club sanctions. Additional officers will be deployed in both city centres to help ensure a safe occasion with minimal disruption.
