Wolverhampton Wanderers are weighing a move for former Sunderland captain Dan Neil as they plan a summer rebuild after relegation, Football League World reports.
The 24-year-old midfielder is set to leave on a free when his contract expires at the end of the season.
An academy graduate at the Stadium of Light, Neil has made 201 appearances for the Black Cats. He was central to their climb from League One, featuring in two promotion-winning campaigns to reach the Premier League.
This season, after Sunderland’s return to the Premier League, he made only three appearances under Régis Le Bris before joining Ipswich Town on loan in January. He has since played regularly, making 13 outings in their push for promotion back to the top flight.
Sunderland have confirmed he will depart this summer, ending a long association that began in the academy. Wolves are expected to reshape their midfield and regard Neil as a cost-effective option with proven experience at that level. Whether Ipswich pursue a permanent deal remains to be seen.
