Hard-fought 2-1 success v FC Blau-Weiß Linz/Kleinmünchen

FC Red Bull Salzburg Women 2-1 FC Blau-Weiß Linz/Kleinmünchen (H/T:1-1). Goals: D’Angelo (10'), G. Spinn (75') - Sachs (35')

Theresa D'Angelo, a former Blue and White player, scored again against her former team, and Greta Spinn completed a highly successful week in style as our FC Red Bull Salzburg women prevailed 2-1 against the bottom-placed team from Upper Austria to prolong their superb October run.

Match summary

Greta Spinn pulled the strings in the opening stages, and it was she who, after an initial statement of intent, initiated the early opening goal from about 20 yards out - clearly inspired by passing her ethics school-leaving exam on Wednesday. Valentina Illinger, Tina Krassnig and Alessia Pamminger also proved they were up for the test – as the Tyrolean inherited a Blue and White misplaced pass in the build-up. Emelie Kobler cleverly laid the ball off to Theresa D'Angelo, who was standing free at the edge of the box – and, just as in the first encounter this season, she scored against her former teammates (10').

Opportunities to increase the lead by half-time went unused, and goalkeeper Zangerl distinguished herself to stop a top opportunity that fell to Kobler. A well-known football adage about making the most of your own opportunities therefore came true as visiting striker Sachs took the ball past Sophia Schirmbrand and successfully slotted the ball into the top right – bringing her team back into the match with their first concrete attack (35').

Following the change of ends, the initiative remained in our hands. Substitute Tina Krassnig and Co tried to force the tempo. A shot on the turn here, a promising header there – and Krassnig again missed from a great position. Shortly before the final quarter of an hour began, their efforts were rewarded: as Emily Schimm broke through on the right flank, and her cross was met by Greta Spinn, who held her own in an aerial duel with opponent Kittel – for a long overdue 2-1 lead (75')!

Once the Royal Blues' final push was over, with Batarilo hitting the post in the final spurt, Pavlovic's team celebrated their third consecutive victory.

What a mature performance! We needed patience because we missed a few really good chances after going 1-0 up in the first half, and the opponents equalised out of nowhere. I'm pleased with how we dealt with this setback after the restart. While we didn't score again, the team believed in themselves until the very end and deservedly won.
