Fabrizio Romano has confirmed Liverpool could make a surprise transfer agreement.

Liverpool’s transfer window has not developed in the way many supporters anticipated.

After the turbulence of last season, expectations were that the club would be aggressive in addressing the issues that had emerged.

A managerial change, the departure of several established stars and clear weaknesses across multiple areas of the squad created the impression that Liverpool were entering a significant period of transition.

On paper, this looked like the beginning of one of the biggest rebuilds at Anfield in recent years.

Yet, as the window has progressed, the reality has been far more measured. Liverpool’s business has been quieter than many expected, leading to understandable frustration among supporters who were hoping to see immediate action.

Several factors have contributed to Liverpool’s cautious approach this summer.

The most significant is the arrival of Andoni Iraola and the transformation of the team’s footballing identity. The new manager has brought with him a clear tactical vision built around intensity, aggressive pressing and rapid transitions.

That inevitably changes the nature of recruitment. Liverpool are no longer simply looking for the same profile of players as they were looking for under Arne Slot.

Those players are not always easy to find, and when the same profiles are being targeted by Europe’s biggest clubs, negotiations become even more difficult.

There has also been a lot of change happening behind the scenes, and that has played a part in how this transfer window has unfolded.

Michael Edwards has stepped away from his role, while Richard Hughes is also preparing to leave. For any club, especially one that relies heavily on recruitment and long-term planning, that kind of upheaval can have an impact. When people in key positions move on, strategies need to be reassessed, responsibilities change and big decisions naturally take more time.

Then there was the World Cup, which made things even more complicated.

Major tournaments almost always slow the transfer market down. Players are focused on representing their countries, while clubs are often reluctant to make big decisions until the tournament is over. A strong performance on the biggest stage can completely change a player’s value, so selling clubs have little reason to rush into negotiations.

Liverpool also suffered a major blow when Yan Diomande, who had become their top attacking target, decided to join Paris Saint-Germain before eventually moving to Real Madrid.

Missing out on a player you have identified as a priority is frustrating at the best of times, but it becomes even harder when there are not many alternatives available who offer the same qualities.

That has left Liverpool having to go back to the drawing board and reassess their options. Rather than making a panic signing just to show activity in the market, the club has been forced to take its time and make sure any new arrival is the right fit for the squad.

And yet they are making moves. Bradley Barcola is a player who Liverpool are now accelerating to sign with negotiations having opened with Paris Saint Germain.

On top of that, there are also murmurs of Liverpool possibly trying to lure Rayan from Bournemouth, a player they were already admiring while he was playing at Vasco da Gama back in the January transfer window.

Rayan and Barcola would be a huge double deal and much needed. It would give Iraola the perfect squad depth in attack while Hugo Ekitike is still coming back from injury.

However, not is all as it seems. Fabrizio Romano has suggested in the latest Here We Go podcast that Liverpool could agree to the surprise departure of Cody Gakpo and could open the doors for Tottenham to sign the Dutchman.

“I will still keep an eye on Tottenham and Cody Gakpo. So let’s see what’s gonna happen there if Liverpool open doors or not…” Romano said.

It would be a huge surprise if Liverpool agreed to this, however Romano seems to think it's a possibility and could still happen so it's something to keep an eye on.
