Tottenham Hotspur: Xavi Simons Credits Timo Werner as Key Influence in Spurs Switch

Tottenham Hotspur’s late summer business has drawn attention across Europe, with Xavi Simons opting for North London despite rival interest. The Dutch midfielder had been linked to Bayern Munich and Chelsea, but it was Spurs who made the decisive move before the window closed.

“I’m happy to be a Tottenham player,” Simons told German newspaper Leipziger Volkszeitung. “Since I was a child, it’s been my dream to play in the Premier League. The club’s vision, the magnificent stadium, the fans, the quality of the team, the coach, it’s a fantastic environment. I want to settle in quickly in my new home and show why Tottenham signed me.”

For Simons, the appeal lay not only in Premier League football but also in Tottenham Hotspur’s current trajectory under Thomas Frank. After replacing Ange Postecoglou in the summer, Frank has overseen a promising start, with Spurs fourth in the table following wins against Burnley and Manchester City, although tempered by defeat to Bournemouth.

Timo Werner’s Role in the Decision

The 21-year-old acknowledged Bayern’s long-standing admiration, particularly given the influence of Max Eberl, who brought him to RB Leipzig in 2023. “In football, there are always discussions,” said Simons. “But I don’t want to name names. Max was one of those who brought me to RB Leipzig, and I’ll always be grateful to him for that. The most important thing was to find a place where I could develop and express my playing style. That’s the way it is at Spurs.”

Central to his choice was a conversation with former Leipzig team-mate Timo Werner, who spent 18 months on loan at Tottenham Hotspur. Werner’s words helped tilt the balance when Chelsea and Bayern hesitated.

“He told me a lot about the club’s greatness and the fantastic fans,” said Simons. “And he said he thought it was the right place for me to learn and improve. Thanks for your trust, Timo!”

Early Impressions of Life at Spurs

Simons has already been impressed by what he has seen since arriving in North London. “My first impressions of the club are great, I felt the energy and ambition when I was introduced to the fans. Expectations are high, both for the team and for me. I’m looking forward to duels against the best players in the world.”

The attacking midfielder’s versatility is expected to be an asset in Frank’s system, particularly as Tottenham Hotspur aim to maintain momentum in the top four. For supporters, the partnership between established figures like Werner and fresh arrivals such as Simons offers a glimpse of a squad being shaped to compete at the highest level.
