Martin Zubimendi has marked Spain’s world title celebrations by posting images from after the final win over Argentina, including family moments and a nod to Real Sociedad.
According to Diario Vasco, he also republished a club photo with Mikel Oyarzabal and Mikel Merino. The picture captures the celebration of Oyarzabal’s goal in the Copa del Rey final Real won against Athletic on 3 April 2021 at La Cartuja.
The trio have been among Real’s standout figures in recent seasons, two graduates of Zubieta and Merino, from Navarre, a club stalwart across six seasons who raised his level to become one of the best midfielders in the Premier League and the world.
Real Sociedad congratulated all three, placing extra focus on their captain, Mikel Oyarzabal. Zubimendi, now an Arsenal player, has returned the affection, including during the champions’ bus parade through Madrid.
The most talked-about moment came when Zubimendi took Real’s flag from Oyarzabal and tried to persuade Unai Simón to kiss it, almost succeeding before the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper realised, as Nico Williams laughed.
Zubimendi also wore the San Sebastián flag around his waist during the on-pitch celebrations and afterwards. On Tuesday, mayor Jon Insausti did not clarify whether there will be an official tribute for the midfielder from San Sebastián and the txuri-urdin captain.
