A Civil Police and Military Brigade operation has arrested 10 Internacional supporters suspected of the attempted homicide of a Grêmio fan in Porto Alegre. The attack happened in March before a Gre-Nal in the Gauchão final.
According to Globo.com, the victim was beaten for several minutes during a clash between organised groups and was left with severe injuries. The case began with a confrontation between rival factions, and one Grêmio fan, left behind as others fled, was then assaulted by Inter supporters.
Alongside the arrests, search and seizure warrants were executed against other suspects. Officers collected potential evidence, including clothing and uniforms worn on the day. Footage shows the victim on the ground being struck by a group with pieces of wood and kicks.
The man nearly died and remains in treatment. He spent 21 days in a coma, suffered an open fracture to his left leg and a serious head injury with loss of bone mass. He still struggles to walk and speak.
The inquiry is examining triply qualified attempted homicide and other offences. A second investigation has been opened to assess the conduct of Grêmio supporters in the incident. All those involved could be held to account as proceedings advance.
