10 players to feature for Sunderland and Liverpool, including a Champions League winner | OneFootball

Sunderland host Liverpool on Wednesday, a meeting with more shared history than many realise.

According to Sunderland Echo, the link spans academy graduates, title winners and European champions.

Jordan Henderson rose from Sunderland’s academy to join Liverpool in 2011, later captaining Jurgen Klopp’s side to Premier League and Champions League titles.

Simon Mignolet helped keep Sunderland up in 2012/13, then joined Liverpool before heading to Club Brugge. Stewart Downing shone on loan in 2003/04, then signed for Liverpool in 2011.

Djibril Cisse won major cups with Liverpool, then scored 11 on loan for Sunderland in 2008/09. El Hadji Diouf went goalless in 16 Sunderland games in 2008/09 before joining Blackburn.

Jason McAteer, a Liverpool utility man, joined Sunderland in October 2001 but was relegated. Phil Babb, a 1995 League Cup winner, played 48 times for Sunderland from 2002 to 2004.

Fabio Borini scored three in 38 for Liverpool but 10 for Sunderland in 2013/14, including both Tyne-Wear derbies. Boudewijn Zenden later played for Sunderland from 2009 to 2011.

Don Hutchison drove Sunderland to seventh in 2000/01 with eight goals and two assists.
