Marking 10 years since Fosun bought Wolves, we revisit five signings that failed to deliver.
ExpressAndStar.com reports that some from the relegated squad could have featured, but these five stood out.
Fabio Silva, a club-record £35 million signing in 2020, managed five goals and six assists in 72 games across four loans before leaving for Borussia Dortmund last summer for up to £23 million.
Patrick Cutrone signed from AC Milan in 2019, £16 million, made 24 appearances before a loan to Fiorentina, and finished on 28 appearances, three goals and four assists before joining Como after loans at Valencia and Empoli.
Goncalo Guedes joined in 2022 for £27.5 million but underwhelmed, with poor displays, body language and attitude, before loans to Benfica and Villarreal. He left for Real Sociedad having seven goals and six assists in 51 games after replacing Morgan Gibbs-White, and was called up to Portugal’s squad for this summer’s World Cup.
Ki-Jana Hoever cost up to £13.5 million from Liverpool in 2020 and failed to convince, drawing a public rebuke from Bruno Lage and taking four loans. Given a chance early last season, he is back in pre-season with one year left, having played 33 times.
Paul Gladon arrived for £1 million a month after Fosun’s 2016 takeover, after a bright start at Heracles Almelo. He played three times that September, failed to score, then after Walter Zenga’s exit Paul Lambert deemed him surplus, loans to Heracles and St Truiden preceded a mutual departure in early 2019.
