Burnley's decision to omit Mike Tresor from their 25-man squad must have the winger fuming

Burnley have endured a disappointing start to the new Championship season under new head coach Nicky Hayen.

The Clarets finished 19th in the Premier League in the previous campaign, and are aiming to now fight for promotion straight back to the top flight.

However, the Lancashire outfit have earned just three points from their opening six fixtures, leaving them inside the relegation zone in these early stages.

And with the transfer window now closed, Hayen will have to make the most of the players available to him, if he is to succeed at Turf Moor.

The transfer market closing meant Burnley had to select a 25-man squad for the Championship season, which led to Mike Tresor being left out.

The winger signed for the club on an initial loan basis at the end of the 2023 summer window before he sealed a permanent move from Genk worth a reported £15.4 million.

And the 27-year-old even featured twice already this league season, coming off the bench in their 2-2 draw at home to West Ham, as well as in their 1-1 draw against Middlesbrough.

Tresor also started the EFL Cup penalty shootout victory against Bradford City, which indicated he had a role in the team, so he will be fuming to be left out.

Mike Tresor signing hasn’t worked for Burnley

Tresor arrived in 2023 with a lot of expectations after Burnley’s promotion to the Premier League under Vincent Kompany, with his highly-creative displays having earned real plaudits over in Belgium.

The Clarets had won the Championship, and were hoping to stabilise their place back in the top flight, but the Belgian played just 16 times in the league, making only three starts.

Kompany’s side ultimately finished 19th in the table, and his next appearance didn’t come until 26 August 2025 in the EFL Cup under Scott Parker.

The centre-back didn’t feature again in the league until four months later in December 2025, coming off the bench in a 3-2 loss to Fulham.

Burnley must seek Mike Tresor exit

There are still some transfer windows open, such as in Saudi Arabia, and Burnley must make use of this and sell Tresor.

The 27-year-old is of no use to Hayen’s side, as he cannot play in the Championship until the registration window re-opens in January.

With Burnley also out of the EFL Cup, there are no competitive fixtures available to him between now and then.

Yet the Clarets are still committed to paying his salary, and he still has a contract that runs until June 2028.

Mike Tresor situation is a sign of Burnley’s mismanagement

Along with Tresor’s omission, Marcus Edwards has also been left out of the squad, which is quite a worrying sign for the management of Burnley.

To have two first team players at the club left out of the team for the next three months is a real disaster, and both Tresor and Edwards have been significantly let down by this decision.

This is not the way to run a team with the ambition of re-establishing themselves as a Premier League regular, and it could also act as warning to future transfer targets to avoid Turf Moor.

Given the 27-year-old still has almost two years left on his contract, the Lancashire outfit need to find a resolution that can either allow him to leave at the earliest opportunity, or for him to be registered in the squad in January.
