17 Arsenal stars jet off as Arteta faces anxious international break

Arsenal’s domestic campaign has paused for the extended international break, with 17 Gunners set to represent their countries at senior level over the coming fortnight.

The unusual September-October window means many players could feature as many as four times before returning to north London, so there will inevitably be plenty for Mikel Arteta and his staff to keep an eye on.

Arsenal already have two withdrawals to monitor

The list could have been even longer. We have already reported that Declan Rice has withdrawn from England duty after suffering an injury against Brighton. That reduces Arsenal’s England representation from five players to four.

There was better news concerning Piero Hincapie. As we discussed when Ecuador decided not to select the Arsenal defender, he can remain in London and work on his fitness rather than adding more matches and travelling to his workload.

Academy youngster Marli Salmon was also due to represent England U18s but has now withdrawn because of injury.

As we suggested in our look at what this international break could do for Arsenal, there could also be positives. Players such as Gyokeres and Zubimendi will have opportunities for valuable minutes and perhaps a chance to rediscover some confidence.

The overriding hope, though, will be that Arsenal’s sizeable international contingent returns to Arteta fit and ready for the resumption of club football.

Are you concerned about so many Arsenal players potentially playing four international matches, or could the extended break actually benefit some of the Gunners?
