It has been months since all of the club's staff received their wages on time.

Max Lowe is set to become the latest Sheffield Wednesday player to get his release from the club after another missed payday.

The club's financial crisis is now well into its third month. You'd have to go back to the end of April for the last time that every player, coach and other member of staff at Hillsborough received the money that they were owed from Dejphon Chansiri on time.

Amid all the mess, a number of squad assets have had to be sold to generate some of the requisite funds. As many as eight players handed in their notices at the start of July when they surpassed two months without payment; only two - Michael Smith and Josh Windass - were successful in seeking their releases.

Once again, at the end of July, not all of the players got the wages that they were owed, as per The Star, which is now set to lead to more departures. Defensive option Lowe, according to Rob Staton, is set to become the third player to leave Wednesday as a result of non-payment.

Max Lowe hands his Sheffield Wednesday notice in

Unlike Smith and Windass, the left-back has only been with the Owls for the past year. He arrived at Hillsborough off the back of a spell with their rivals, Sheffield United, becoming one of former boss Danny Rohl's first summer signings in 2024.

Lowe, who is estimated to earn £17k-a-week at Hillsborough, made 34 appearances, including 31 starts, for Wednesday last season, but is now set to end his stay with the club a year early.

The effects of Chansiri's inability to properly fund the club are causing problems within every faculty of Hillsborough. This weekend's scheduled friendly against Burnley has been cancelled after the players that remain refused to play because of the lack of money they have received from the club in the past 90 days.

The north stand of the ground has had to be shut because it has failed to comply with safety regulations. Even Wednesday's young scholars, who only receive about £1000 a month from the club, haven't got their owed fees on time, according to The Star.

Max Lowe is unlikely to be the last Sheffield Wednesday player to leave this summer

Lowe's steps to try and jump off this sinking ship were almost inevitable, and it'd be a surprise if more didn't follow in his, Smith's and Windass' footsteps. Others tried to last month but were ultimately unsuccessful.

Even with the appointment of Henrik Pedersen as Wednesday's new manager, there isn't much of a coaching staff around him, or much of a squad to work with. The defender's departure will leave only 14 first-team options for the Dane to choose from come next weekend's opening fixture against Leicester City.

It's tough to see how this situation will be salvaged any time soon, especially with Chansiri's lofty £100 million takeover demands.
