It was not quite the nine-goal thriller we have become accustomed to seeing between these sides, though an energetic opening saw Emmanuel Iyoha and Omar Sillah score a goal apiece. A second half lacking cutting edge and composure in the final third ultimately ensured the two sides had to settle for a share of the spoils.

Magdeburg got off to the perfect start just five minutes in through Iyoha. A long ball down the right was flicked on by Herbert Bockhorn into the area and into the path of Iyoha, allowing the forward to strike a half-volley past Florian Hellstern at his near post to net his fourth goal of the campaign.

It was the third goal Fürth had conceded inside the opening 15 minutes this season, though they produced a response of their own 20 minutes in.

After starting the move with a short passage of play around the edge of the area, Sillah continued his run into the box before latching onto a Felix Klaus pass and slotting the ball past the onrushing Dominik Reimann to make it 1-1. The goal was awarded following a VAR check after initially being ruled out for offside.

The attacking intent from both sides settled somewhat following an energetic opening 20 minutes, though two good chances arrived in quick succession in the 38th and 39th minutes.

First, Mateusz Żukowski skipped into the penalty area before aiming for the far corner, forcing Hellstern into a good save with his feet. At the other end, Shinta Appelkamp received the ball inside the area before attempting a delicate chip over Reimann, though his effort drifted just wide to ensure the score remained 1-1 at the break.

Fürth made an immediate impact at the start of the second half when Sillah was sent through on goal via a long ball. The forward won the foot race against Tobias Müller before getting a shot away with his left foot, though Reimann produced a good save to turn the ball behind for a corner.

Reimann was called into action again before the hour mark. Klaus played Appelkamp through before the winger cut inside onto his right foot and unleashed a fierce effort towards goal, though the Magdeburg goalkeeper got down well to keep it out.

The visitors had their best chance of the half in the 65th minute through goalscorer Iyoha. Torben Müsel laid the ball off to the Magdeburg forward, who fired a close-range effort towards goal, though Hellstern produced a fine save to keep the scores level.

With the clock ticking towards the 90-minute mark, clear-cut chances dried up, with much of the game being played in the middle of the park as the contest appeared destined to end in a draw.

Fürth had the final opportunity to create something in the closing stages through a free-kick just outside the area. However, the resulting header sailed well over the crossbar, ensuring the score finished 1-1.
