Syli National stalls the Fennecs in Casablanca, while the Cranes stay in contention in Group G
Guinea secured a goalless draw against Algeria on Monday, September 8, at the Mohammed V Complex in Casablanca, during Matchday 8 of the African qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup. Uganda, meanwhile, claimed a 2-0 victory over Somalia to keep its qualification hopes alive.
Algeria had the chance to book its ticket to the 2026 World Cup with a win against the Syli National. Vladimir Petkovic’s men dominated proceedings at the Mohammed V Stadium but were repeatedly thwarted by a well-organized Guinean defense and an inspired Moussa Camara between the posts.
The Syli National stood firm against Algeria in a match played on neutral ground. Unable to use their approved facilities, Guinea hosted the Fennecs in Morocco. Despite Algeria’s early dominance, the Guineans held off their opponents’ attacks thanks to a disciplined backline and a vigilant Moussa Camara in goal.
Chasing a win to seal their place at the World Cup, Algeria lacked clinical finishing. Mohamed Amoura squandered a clear chance in the first half, while Youcef Atal saved his side with a goal-line clearance in the second. The match ended in a goalless stalemate—a result that throws Group G wide open and leaves the Fennecs with a bitter sense of frustration.
In the other Group G fixture, Uganda took charge at home against Somalia. The Cranes opened the scoring in the 6th minute with a penalty converted by Allan Okello, before Jude Ssemugabi doubled the lead just before halftime (39’). This win allows Uganda (15 points) to close the gap to four points behind Algeria (19 points), with two games left to play against Botswana and the Fennecs.
