The French Football Federation said in a statement that Robert Mouynet, the last surviving member of France’s 1958 World Cup squad, died on Wednesday aged 96.
Mouynet was never capped by the senior national team, yet he was one of the 22 players who secured third place at that World Cup.
A knee sprain just before the tournament in Sweden sidelined the Lyon right back, in a campaign illuminated by Just Fontaine’s record 13 goals. He watched from the stands through to the semi-final defeat to Brazil, inspired by a young Pelé, which finished 2-5.
Olympique Lyonnais and Toulouse also marked his passing on social media, with Lyon expressing its great sadness.
Born in Toulouse in 1930, he came through there, won the Division 2 title in 1953 and later ended his career after 408 professional matches. Between two spells at Toulouse he played for AS Cannes from 1953 to 1955, then for Lyon between 1955 and 1959.
