Following South Africa's forfeit loss to Lesotho, Nigeria is back in the race for qualification for the 2026 World Cup.

The Super Eagles, currently third with 11 points, are now just 3 points behind Benin and South Africa with two rounds left in the qualifiers.

But this situation fails to impress Dimeji Lawal, the former Nigerian international (3 caps), who remains pessimistic about the Super Eagles’ chances in Group C.

“Let's not get carried away. I was certain from the start that FIFA would dock points from Bafana Bafana. But the real question is: can we win our last two matches? That’s what matters. I’m not very enthusiastic. What I’m really looking forward to is seeing how we can prepare in a way that guarantees victories in these next two games,” he commented in a statement to Brila.

To qualify for the 2026 World Cup, Victor Osimhen and his teammates must defeat Lesotho (October 10) and Benin (October 14) by the widest possible margin and hope for slip-ups from the Cheetahs and Bafana Bafana.
