The return of Gavi continues to move closer for FC Barcelona, although the midfielder will still need more time before he can make his competitive comeback.

The Spanish international has been sidelined for several months while recovering from a medial meniscus tear suffered in September 2025.

After undergoing arthroscopy and a repair procedure on his right knee, the 21-year-old has gradually progressed in his rehabilitation and has recently returned to training with the rest of the Barcelona squad.

With his recovery entering its final stages, as Mundo Deportivo has reported, Hansi Flick confirmed in his latest press conference that the midfielder will travel with the squad for Saturday’s match against Athletic Club at San Mames, although he is still not ready to feature in competitive action:

“He will travel with us, and he is training with us, but he’s still not ready to play. Maybe after the next break. We’ll see.”

The trip will continue directly to Newcastle United in England, with the squad flying out on Sunday morning after spending the night in Bilbao. Gavi will remain with the team throughout this journey, though he will not be able to feature in either match.

Flick and the coaching staff are managing his reintegration gradually, prioritizing his full recovery. His expected return to the pitch is projected for after the next international break.

Gavi’s presence with the team, even off the field, is expected to provide an extra boost to the Catalan squad.
