As the season enters a decisive phase, workload management has become one of the key challenges for Barcelona boss Hansi Flick. Players expected to perform at the highest level week after week often face the physical and mental consequences of constant competition, especially in positions that demand intensity at both ends of the pitch.

At the Catalan club, Jules Kounde is beginning to reflect that reality. The French defender has been one of Hansi Flick’s most trusted players and currently stands as the second-most used member of the squad, having logged 2,635 minutes, only behind Eric Garcia. His availability and consistency have made him a cornerstone of the team’s structure.

However, the accumulation of minutes appears to be catching up with him. As highlighted by SPORT, Kounde has shown signs of fatigue in recent matches, most notably in the clash against Mallorca, where Jan Virgili repeatedly found success against him. The defender looked less decisive than usual, raising questions about the impact of his heavy workload.

The right-back role at Barcelona is particularly demanding. Beyond defensive duties, Kounde is required to contribute constantly in attack, often supporting Lamine Yamal by overlapping, creating space, or forming two-on-one situations. This dual responsibility increases both physical strain and psychological pressure, especially when maintained over long stretches of the season.

Although his effort and professionalism remain unquestioned, recent performances have included moments of hesitation. Similar signs were visible in matches against Elche and Copenhagen, where defensive uncertainty and a costly misplaced pass resulted in goals conceded. These isolated errors have strengthened the perception that fatigue is affecting his usual level of concentration.

Hansi Flick has already attempted to manage Kounde’s workload. The 27-year-old Frenchman was initially rested against Real Oviedo, but Barcelona’s needs forced the coach to introduce him in the second half. A comparable situation occurred in the Copa del Rey match against Albacete, where unforeseen circumstances again led to Kounde being used despite plans to limit his minutes.

Kounde’s own high standards also play a role. Flick has admitted on several occasions that he has had to restrain the defender in training, as the Frenchman often pushes himself beyond what is required.

However, despite the recent dip, the coaching staff remains calm. They are convinced that this is a temporary phase and expect Kounde to return to his best form as the season reaches its most decisive moments.
