Leeds United face a delicate call over Lukas Nmecha, with Pete O’Rourke of Football Insider reporting that the German forward could reject a new contract and leave Elland Road at the end of the season if his role does not improve. Nmecha joined Leeds United in 2025 on a two-year deal, so his contract runs until June 2027 and he is now in its final season.

He made 37 appearances last term and produced 10 goal contributions, yet Daniel Farke gave him only 10 Premier League starts. This campaign has brought more bench duty, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin holding the starting striker role, although Nmecha has still supplied useful moments.

He assisted in the league against Brentford before setting up another goal in the Carabao Cup defeat at Chelsea on 9 September. Football Insider previously reported surprise Wrexham interest in August, but Leeds United resisted selling without a replacement. Contract talks now face a serious test.

Can Leeds United find a better role for Nmecha?

Yes, and Farke should seriously consider a two-striker structure rather than treating Nmecha as a spare part. Calvert-Lewin gives Leeds United a strong focal point with his aerial ability and physical presence. Nmecha offers something different. He can drift into pockets, combine with midfielders and attack space around a main striker, which makes a pairing more useful than another body on the bench.

Why do Leeds United need both options on the pitch?

A 4-2-2-2 could give both forwards defined jobs without wrecking the midfield. A diamond could achieve the same result if Leeds United accept narrower attacking positions and give their full-backs more responsibility for width. That matters because low-block opponents can frustrate a lone striker, especially when Leeds rely on one player to occupy centre-backs for long stretches.

Nmecha’s early output makes the selection issue harder to ignore. Two assists from limited minutes suggest he can influence matches without needing a long run before producing. Leeds United should therefore judge him on what he can add beside Calvert-Lewin, rather than only asking whether he can replace him.

There is a financial angle too. Letting a useful forward drift into the final months of his deal while barely starting him could shrink his value and invite a free transfer. A stronger role could improve his output, preserve his value and give Leeds United a second attacking route. Farke’s own contract talks remain positive, but the manager has a separate decision to make on Nmecha, and the simplest answer may be to put both forwards on the pitch together for Leeds United.
