3-1 defeat in Bremen | OneFootball

RB Leipzig fell to their first defeat of the season away at SV Werder Bremen (3-1) on matchday 2. 

Eren Dinkçi opened the scoring in the fourth minute after getting on the end of a pass from Chuki. The striker was able to slot the ball past Maarten Vandevoordt to give the hosts the lead.

Leipzig were able to grow into the game after that and appeared to have been awarded a penalty in the 26th minute. Christopher Nkunku was brought down inside the box by Werder goalkeeper Karl Hein, but the decision was overturned after a VAR check. Referee Benjamin Brand reversed his decision after the replays showed that Hein had managed to play the ball before making contact with Nkunku. 

Our number 28 then had the chance to equalise shortly afterwards on his return to the starting XI, but Hein produced an excellent save to deny him (28’).

Werder wrap up the win after the break

The Red Bulls continued to push after the break but struggled to find a way through Werder’s compact defence. Niclas Füllkrug headed home from a corner in the 68th minute to make it 2-0.

RBL were then denied twice in quick succession five minutes later. Nkunku was again thwarted by Hein before Antonio Nusa thundered a shot against the crossbar from outside the box.

Marco Grüll added Bremen’s third in the 80th minute, before Ridle Baku pulled one back to make it 3-1 in the 95th minute. It proved too little, too late.

The result saw the Red Bulls suffer their first defeat in their third competitive game of the season and lose to Werder for the first time in 14 meetings, following a run of 13 games unbeaten against SVW. RBL will be back in action on Thursday (21:00 CEST) when they travel to Como 1907 in the Champions League.
