It is a victory that means that the Trotters now occupy fifth spot in the division in what has been a positive start to the new campaign.

Here, we take a look at three things we clearly learnt about Bolton after their 2-1 win against the Cod Army…

Oladapo Afolayan stars

Oladapo Afolayan has been unable to consistently start games for the League One outfit this season but yesterday’s performance was one where he fully showcased what he is about.

A real creative threat all afternoon for the Trotters, the 25-year-old’s progressive runs and intelligence from an attacking midfield position caused havoc for the Fleetwood defence.

A mightily threatening prospect when on song, Afolayan, and Bolton as a whole, will be hoping that he can start to produce this type of performance regularly once more.

Dion Charles’ struggles continue

Despite a two-goal weekend, no team in the top 15 of League One have scored fewer goals than Bolton, with Dion Charles struggling in front of goal in recent weeks.

The former Accrington Stanley man is still someone who works relentlessly out of possession and provides the Trotters with an outlet but he is evidently lacking confidence in front of goal.

Charles certainly has the ability to emerge as a consistent scorer of goals at the University of Bolton Stadium, so it will be interesting to see if he can rediscover form.

Strength-in-depth

Ian Evatt has created an incredibly competitive squad at Bolton and that can be evidenced by the strength of their bench yesterday.

The likes of Kieran Sadlier, Josh Sheehan and Jon Dadi Bodvarsson were brought on against Fleetwood, with Declan John, Jack Iredale and MJ Williams also featuring in the 18.

Not only does this level of competition drive performance levels, it will also help if somewhat of an injury crisis occurs at the University of Bolton Stadium as this campaign progresses.
