30 million for four games? Nübel becomes a financial disaster for Bayern

FC Bayern’s goalkeeping plans are once again the subject of debate. While everything revolves around the future of Manuel Neuer and his potential successor Jonas Urbig, one name that has been in the Munich books for years is now back in the spotlight: Alexander Nübel
Germany’s record international player Lothar Matthäus has spoken out clearly about the personnel issue in Sport BILD – and criticized the economic side in particular. For him, the Nübel case is „probably the biggest problem in the summer“
The 29-year-old moved to Säbener Straße from FC Schalke 04 on a free transfer in 2020. The plan was to carefully develop him as Manuel Neuer’s successor. However, the 2014 world champion remained at the top level – both athletically and physically – for longer than expected. Nübel hardly got a chance to play and was initially loaned out to AS Monaco for two years and has been playing for VfB Stuttgart since 2023
Even though Nübel came on a free transfer, he was by no means a zero-sum game for Bayern. Monaco and Stuttgart each only paid part of his salary, with the record champions continuing to pay the rest
Matthäus calculates: „He cost Bayern a lot of money and was paid over five years, which means that he has already received 30 million plus minus money and played very little for FC Bayern.“ Particularly explosive: Nübel has only played four games for the German record champions so far
A hefty sum – especially for a player who has never played a sporting role in Munich. For Matthäus, it is therefore clear: „I would say that selling him now would be the right step for Nübel and for Bayern.“

A transfer in the summer seems quite realistic, especially as Nübel’s loan to Stuttgart is coming to an end. However, a deal could be difficult economically. His contract in Munich runs until 2030 – so FC Bayern would have to find a solution that makes both sporting and financial sense
Matthäus believes that Bayern could at least compensate for their investments of recent years with a transfer fee of 30 to 40 million euros. However, this hardly seems realistic. Nübel’s current market value is around twelve million euros. Even with a strong negotiating position, a transfer fee in the region of 30 million euros would be difficult to achieve
In sporting terms, Nübel showed solid to good performances both in Monaco and at VfB Stuttgart, but also allowed himself a few slip-ups. In the race for a place in goal for the German national team, he recently lost out to Hoffenheim’s Oliver Baumann
This leaves Bayern with a complex situation: Manuel Neuer will not decide on his future until after the end of the season, Jonas Urbig is seen internally as the designated successor – and Alexander Nübel is caught between two stools with a long-term contract.
