The recent win over Elche was a great start to the La Liga campaign for FC Barcelona. All summer long, the Catalan giants had been working on reinforcing their squad, and it truly is a wonderful sight to see that all that effort come to fruition.
However, despite the reliable signings that have already been made, there were some doubts heading into the season in regards to a few specific positions. One such position that raised doubts was the centre-back one, and the limited number of reliable options there.
Yet, even with Ronald Araujo loaned out and Pau Cubarsi still needing some time to return to full fitness, Barça have found solace in the resurgence of Andreas Christensen. As highlighted by SPORT, the Danish defender now finally looks to be back at his best.
For the first time since September of last year, Christensen completed a full 90 minutes for Barcelona in an official game. Moreover, he delivered a solid performance and managed to keep a clean sheet as well, marking a proper resurgence for the 30-year-old Danish defender.
Beyond this, his performances and availability during the Barça preseason were impressive as well. Now looking consistent and willing to challenge for a starting role within the team, Flick really seems to be happy with Christensen’s development heading into this new season.
However, while Christensen’s form and rediscovery is worth acknowledging, it still does not fully solve Barça’s lack of depth in certain positions. Even now, the future of a player like Alejandro Balde remains up in the air, while the options for potential arrivals are not exactly fully clear nor do the transfer-related advances seem focused. Either way, despite the impressive performances of certain players, the club really needs to understand their targets this summer and execute any pending operations as soon as possible.
