There is belief Gus Hamer will remain a Sheffield United player "till at least the end of the season," but one factor remains which could see the midfielder leave in January.

This comes after the report from Football Insider that states Blades are bracing themselves for expected transfer interest in the 28-year-old during the January window, but are determined to keep him at all costs.

Given the South Yorkshire club’s disappointing season so far, the question now looming over Bramall Lane is whether Chris Wilder's side can convince the Dutch playmaker to remain in red and white beyond next month.

FLW’s Blades Fan Pundit, Jimmy from Blades Ramble, gave his perspective on whether the club can realistically hold onto their prized asset when the transfer window opens.

Gustavo Hamer "will leave" Sheffield United in January on one condition

Hamer, who signed for United from Coventry City for a reported fee of £15m two years ago, currently has 18 months remaining on his contract - which Jimmy thinks is a potential issue transfer wise.

The Fan Pundit began by telling FLW, "I think this would’ve been a much easier answer had we had the season that a lot of us - including the club - were expecting.

"And that doesn’t mean that we’d walk the league but certainly that we’d be in and around the top six and challenging, but we’ve had such a terrible start to the season."

Jimmy then outlined the main concern facing Hamer, who is the third-highest paid player at the club, via Capology estimates, earning an estimated £30k-per-week. "Gus has got 18 months left on his contract, so he’s only going to depreciate in value from here. I think, like with any of our players, if we get an offer too good to say no to then Gus will leave," he said.

Referring back to the earlier-mentioned Football Insider report, Wilder reportedly views Hamer as a player who could turn their season around - so the club’s desire to keep him is understandable.

The reason why Gus Hamer is not expected to leave Sheffield United next month

One aspect of Hamer's situation that cannot be overlooked by Jimmy is the midfielder’s injury troubles. In total, he's spent six games sidelined with a knee injury, and our Fan Pundit believes the midfielder is yet to get back to full fitness.

With only three goal involvements registered in the league so far this season, it’s fair to say he’s not expected to reach his final tally of 18 from 24/25 - which saw the ex-Sky Blues favourite win the Championship Player of the Season award.

When talking about the chances of whether Hamer would actually be subject of an offer 'too good to be true', Jimmy said, "I don’t expect to get that to be honest, he’s just coming back from injury, I still don’t think he’s at peak fitness."

"So, there's always a chance you lose your best players and clearly we don’t want to do that, but the club will weigh up the pros and cons and we may see him leave in January," he added.

One potential move that has persistently surrounded Hamer is Leeds United's apparent interest in bringing him to Elland Road. However, the aforementioned report mentions that the moment for such a move may have already passed.

Which is perhaps why Jimmy doesn't expect Hamer to actually leave South Yorkshire next month. The Fan Pundit concluded by saying, "If you’re asking me do I think he’ll actually leave - no I don’t.

"I think he’ll be with us till at least the end of the season, but it wouldn’t shock me if somebody came in with a late bid in January."

Ultimately, as Jimmy spoke about, the possibility of a bid for Hamer cannot be entirely dismissed as this is the Championship. Even if Leeds aren’t expected to reignite their interest in Hamer, there’s surely a host of other clubs keeping tabs on his return to full fitness.
