Sean Dyche’s Nottingham Forest reign ended with a late-night sacking after a 0-0 draw with Wolves, a night of 35 shots and boos. Forest posted a club record xG of 2.8 without scoring in the Premier League.

According to NY Times, owner Evangelos Marinakis summoned several senior players after the match, heard their concerns, then began the search for a fourth manager of the campaign.

It was the 14th-highest xG without a goal in the league since 2018-19. The 35 efforts made up 10.5 per cent of Forest’s attempts this season.

Only Manchester United have had more shots without scoring in the last decade, 38 in a 0-0 with Burnley in 2016, when Dyche was Burnley manager. Forest’s next highest xG without a goal was 2.2 in Ange Postecoglou’s final match, a 3-0 defeat to Chelsea in October.

Results alone did not seal his fate, the Wolves stalemate was the final straw after worrying displays against Everton home and away, in Braga and at Wrexham. Forest had been unbeaten in four before a 3-1 defeat at Leeds.

At Wrexham in January, he rebuked fringe players, saying they had to improve and that the display was unacceptable. Many returned 13 days later in Braga in the Europa League, and Forest were worse.

With 12 games left, only three points separate Forest and West Ham, now managed by Nuno, in 18th. Vitor Pereira tops the shortlist, familiar to Forest from an Olympiacos double in 2014-15 and a mid-table Wolves uplift in 2024-25.
