We have taken a look at four players who could still leave Bolton Wanderers before the close of the summer transfer window.
Bolton Wanderers returned to the Championship this season after their longest stint outside of England’s top two divisions and a lot of work has been done to make their squad competitive.
After hammering Stockport County by four goals to one in the League One play-off final back in May, Wanderers immediately got to work with the announcement that George Johnston, Jordi Osei-Tutu, Kyle Dempsey and Carlos Mendes Gomes would not be being retained.
Combining that with the sale of Szabolcs Schon and seven loanees departing, Steven Schumacher, as well as Sporting Director Fergal Harkin and Head of Recruitment Jimmy Dickinson, were set for an extremely busy summer.
There have been more outgoings since then, too, with Sonny Sharples-Ahmed and David Abimbola both moving to Hednesford Town, while Richard Taylor, Sam Inwood and Lewis Temple have gone on loan to Bromley, Swindon Town and Oldham Athletic, respectively.
, and wanted, and that should also again lead to a few departures – we have taken a look at four players who may well depart the Toughsheet Community Stadium before the close of the summer transfer window.
Having arrived alongside fellow goalkeeper Jack Bonham in the January transfer window, former Fleetwood Town shot-stopper David Harrington has yet to make a first-team appearance for The Trotters.
The understudy to Bonham but ahead of Nathan Broome in the pecking-order, it could well be that 26-year-old Harrington finds himself shifted out on loan before the close of the window.
The main reason for that being that Wanderers appear interested in signing a goalkeeper in the final few days of the window, having previously been linked with Kayne van Oevelen and Asmir Begovic, as well as Arthur Okonkwo, who has now joined Charlton Athletic.
Broome, brought in as third-choice anyway last summer, is the likelier candidate to remain in that role while game time will likely be of more importance to the Cork-born Harrington.

From the start of the summer, one of the most likely first-team departure alongside Richard Taylor was former Peterborough United attacking midfielder Joel Randall.
Randall joined Bolton in January 2025, coveted by then manager Ian Evatt, but his long move north has not gone according to plan, not helped by Evatt’s departure about a week after Randall arrived.
After being given an opportunity by Schumacher initially, Randall was eventually loaned out to Blackpool for the second half of last season, reuniting with Evatt, and is deemed surplus to requirements at Wanderers, so his departure before the close of the window feels inevitable.

Another signing made within the last year or so that may well be departing before the close of the window is versatile forward Charlie Warren.
Warren arrived at Bolton from non-league outfit Felixstowe and Walton United in the summer of 2025 and did feature in first-team plans for much of the first half of last season, even coming off the bench in their opening home game of the season as they defeated Plymouth Argyle.
Injuries and failure to discover form in EFL Trophy appearances saw Warren also loaned out in January, joining Aldershot Town in the National League and performing reasonably well.
Warren is unlikely to get first-team minutes at all this season, especially with Bolton already out of the EFL Cup and the fourth competition something that they are no longer in, and so a loan deal, or even a permanent move, would not be a surprise.

Perhaps the highest profile exit from the club this summer is still expected to be John McAtee, amid reports that Cardiff City, Charlton Athletic, Lincoln City and Sheffield Wednesday have all expressed an interest in the attacker.
The Walkden-born forward has had an up and down time at Wanderers, but some productive cameos off the bench in their play-off campaign reignited a good relationship he shares with supporters.
An injury to Ruben Rodrigues also presented McAtee with the opportunity to start their opener against Preston North End, performing well and getting an assist for Bolton’s second goal in a 2-1 victory against their fellow Lancastrians.
Whether that be him putting himself in the so-called ‘shop window’ or proving that he can genuinely compete at the level is up for discussion but what would be no surprise is McAtee leaving before the close of the window and Wanderers perhaps upgrading on him in that position to provide competition for the now absent Rodrigues when he returns.
