4 free agents that Sheffield Wednesday could sign once given the green light ft ex-Wolves and Ipswich Town stars

A look at four other free agents that Sheffield Wednesday could target after being linked with Andy Rinomhota and Timothy Fosu-Mensah.

Sheffield Wednesday have endured a miserable time of it both on and off the pitch, but the Owls will believe there is light at the end of the tunnel, albeit League One football remains almost an inevitability.

Being placed into administration allowed Wednesday supporters to celebrate the prolonged departure of Dejphon Chansiri, and the club is expected to eventually be bought and saved at some stage in the near future.

In the meantime, manager Henrik Pedersen will be keen for Wednesday to bring in some free agents in order to reinforce their fairly beleaguered squad.

The likes of former Reading and Cardiff City midfielder Andy Rinomhota (now signed back at Reading), as well as former Manchester United defender Timothy Fosu-Mensah, are reported targets, but there has not yet been a green light given for the club to complete the deals.

Until that happens, Wednesday will have to plod along with their current squad, but FLW has looked at a few other options that could be pursued should they eventually indeed be allowed to do so.

Kortney Hause

Having departed Aston Villa at the end of his contract in the summer, Kortney Hause has remained a free agent since, but the former England youth international would represent a reasonable addition for a rock-bottom Championship outfit.

The 30-year-old centre-back, who can also play at left-back and so would appear ideal to compete with Max Lowe for the left centre-back role in the back three implemented by Pedersen, hasn’t played senior football since playing for Watford on loan in the 2022/23 campaign.

Without being too harsh, though, beggars cannot necessarily be choosers at this stage and the former Wolverhampton Wanderers man would still be an experienced body at the back.

Samy Morsy

In the summer, Samy Morsy departed Ipswich Town to sign for Kuwait SC on a free transfer, but the former Egypt international recently departed the club and the country to return to England, with the move having not worked out.

Morsy has been reported to be training with hometown club Wolves, who have now poached Middlesbrough boss Rob Edwards, but it would remain very unlikely a contract would be offered to the former Wigan Athletic and Chesterfield man.

Now at the age of 35, Morsy has experienced the rollercoaster ride of playing across all four divisions of English football, and strapping himself in to try and marshal Wednesday’s midfield would be a coup for the Owls.

Nathan Redmond

Another player who failed to get themselves a move in the summer but would surely still be more than capable of competing at Championship level is Nathan Redmond.

The former England international departed Burnley, who gained promotion to the Premier League, at the end of last season and has remained a free agent, despite going on trial with Sheffield United in late August.

Wednesday have played their 3-5-2 system this season through necessity more than any sort of tactical ideology, and there is a desperation for wide players, and the experience and pedigree of Redmond would be a good addition, at least on a short-term basis.

Duncan Watmore

Wednesday supporters will be hoping to eventually be able to discuss the tactical merits, and the pros and cons of each prospective new signing, rather than just needing to get bodies in, and Duncan Watmore is one that does allow a bit more talk about the football.

The likes of Hause, Morsy and Redmond provide invaluable experience to a mish-mash of a squad, as well as filling holes that are required; Watmore, whilst having his own reasonable experience for the second-tier, would provide a tactical option for Pedersen.

Capable of playing as the striker or as a winger, Watmore’s intensity and aggression will be exactly what Wednesday fans want to see, whilst also providing them with a bit more tactical versatility in the final third.
