Leeds United have already broken their transfer record with England goalkeeper James Trafford, and could yet do so again if Adam Underwood can pull off a coup for Igor Paixao. The Marseille winger underlined his value with a stunning strike in a 3-1 win over Athletic Bilbao.

Foot Mercato reports that Leeds have been told a £43m fee would be needed to land Paixao this summer. Marseille are open to a sale after he contributed to 19 goals, a year after he chose them over Leeds despite an accepted Feyenoord bid.

Trafford joined from Manchester City in a deal worth up to £45m, structured as £40m plus £5m in add-ons if triggered while he is a Leeds goalkeeper. The England international has signed through 2031.

At the Velodrome, two of Marcelo Bielsa’s former clubs met. Angel Gomes put Marseille ahead, Oscar Sancet equalised, then Paixao cut in from the left and curled into the bottom corner before the break.

Marseille added a late third and Paixao’s effort drew plenty of attention on social media. Signing him would be a game-changer for Leeds, bringing a genuine Champions League-level threat who is yet to reach his peak.

Whether Leeds have another £40m-plus to spend remains to be seen, with back-up for Trafford and left-back competition for Gabi Gudmundsson still required. The Swede could miss the first two matches.
