Leeds United are lining up a new no 2 to support record signing James Trafford, with Paraguay’s Orlando Gill on a shortlist, and Lucas Perri expected to depart, according to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk.
England international Trafford, 23, was unveiled on Thursday evening as the club’s new no 1 after joining from Manchester City for £40m plus add-ons.
Karl Darlow and Illan Meslier have left following the expiry of their contracts. Darlow rejected new terms and signed for Manchester United. Meslier, who did not play a minute all season, joined Arsenal to cover David Raya and Kepa Arrizabalaga.
Their exits left Perri and Alex Cairns as the senior keepers, excluding youngsters. Torino are interested in Perri, and Leeds were unwilling to sanction a move until replacing him. Trafford’s arrival now clears the path once Perri overcomes a slight quad issue.
Perri is expected to join Torino on an initial loan with an option to buy while Leeds bring in a new no 2.
The shortlist is understood to feature five to 10 goalkeepers, including Gill, 26, of San Lorenzo, who played every minute of Paraguay’s five World Cup games, knocking out Germany before a round of 16 defeat by France. Reports from South America of a Leeds bid are wide of the mark.
