Turki Alalshikh pulled out of a late deal to buy Derby County, even though his takeover bid had been approved by the Independent Football Regulator and the EFL.

The Saudi businessman has huge wealth, so Rams fans had been excited at the prospect of fresh investment arriving into the club to potentially take the club to the next level.

But, the announcement on Monday evening changed everything, and with Derby confirming the club is now ‘off the market’, there will be a focus on trying to keep improving under the current regime.

Owner David Clowes remains a hugely popular figure at Pride Park after rescuing the club when they were on the brink, and the progress they have made in the past few years has been enormous.

So, there will be confidence that they can continue to kick-on, especially with John Eustace, but the failed takeover will have an impact.

Firstly, this should stop all the uncertainty surrounding the club, which couldn’t have been beneficial for anyone involved.

Of course, you can understand why communication was limited after it became apparent Alalshikh was interested in buying the club, and these things always take time to complete, so there’s no blame attached to anyone.

But, the silence from all involved is not ideal for a football club, especially during a transfer window. So, whilst it may not be the outcome that Derby fans wanted, it does at least provide clarity on their situation.

Another knock-on impact is that Derby will now be working on a reduced transfer budget moving forward.

That’s not a criticism of Clowes, but the reality is that he doesn’t boast the same wealth as Alalshikh, so it means Derby are going to be shopping in a different market to what they would’ve done if the takeover had gone through.

Pleasingly, they have a good record in the market in recent years, but it would’ve been interesting to see what the recruitment team could’ve done with more money available.

Following on from that, with the takeover not happening, Derby know where they stand, and they can get to work on bringing in new players.

You can understand why the club held back on signing players, but now they need to make some moves in the market, as the squad is lacking in several key areas, including central midfield and out wide.

So, Derby fans will now want to see some progress, and they will hope that players can quickly arrive to help Eustace’s squad.

If Alalshikh had completed his takeover, it felt inevitable that there would be speculation over Eustace, as the boxing promoter may have wanted to bring in his own man.

That’s an understandable stance, as he will have been calling the shots and putting money into the club, so, even if Eustace is a quality Championship boss, he could have wanted to go down a different road.

Now, that’s not going to happen, and the former player will remain in charge, which is a huge positive for the club.

It can galvanise the fans

Finally, the way Alalshikh has pulled out of this deal may annoy some Derby fans, as they are understandably confused why he did it at such a late stage.

But, in a way, it may work in the Rams’ favour and pull everyone together, as there will be an appreciation of what Clowes has done for the club, and that they are in a positive place.
