€50m Real Madrid defender receives interest from Premier League giants

Real Madrid’s aggressive business in the transfer window continued on Monday, as they made it official that they had signed Marc Cucurella from Chelsea. The arrival of the Spain international, which could rise to €60m in cost, leaves Los Blancos with something of a conundrum at left-back

With Cucurella, who naturally is slated to be the starter under Jose Mourinho after such a high fee, Los Blancos now have four left-backs on their books. Ferland Mendy has a year left on his deal, as does Fran Garcia and Alvaro Carreras arrived only last summer for €50m from Benfica. It is expected that at least one, if not two of those players will leave this summer.

Chelsea consider move for Alvaro Carreras

According to Diario AS, Chelsea are currently considering replacing Cucurella with Carreras. Jorrel Hato is expected to step into Cucurella’s role, but he is currently their only left-back, meaning Chelsea are likely to invest in the position again. New manager Xabi Alonso is clearly familiar with Carreras from their time at the Bernabeu, and while Carreras is keen to stay in the Spanish capital, he is clearly no longer the starting left-back. The suggestion is that Real Madrid could be open to cashing in on Carreras if they can make back what they spent on him.

Should Real Madrid move on from Carreras?

Carreras showed signs of his impressive talent early on under Alonso, and it is worth noting that Cucurella will be 28 this summer, and the former Benfica man could well be the readymade replacement. The competition between the two could also be helpful, and if Jose Mourinho decides to use a back five at times, then they could even operate together. That said, it is a hefty investment to have in what may be a back-up option for some time, and the safe and perhaps sensible option would be to cash in if a suitable offer comes in.
