While Palestinian football continues its struggle to exist amid the ongoing conflict with Israel, a high-profile friendly could soon become a reality. According to Marca, Catalonia and Palestine are currently in talks to organize a match slated for November at the Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium in Montjuïc, the temporary home of Barça during the Camp Nou renovations. With nearly 50,000 seats available, the fixture would carry both sporting and political significance.

Talks already at an advanced stage

Catalonia head coach Gerard López has confirmed that negotiations are ongoing:

"The president of the Federation told me it’s not official yet, but it could be within a few days."

The Catalan Federation and the regional government are pushing to make this project a reality, although it still depends on the approval of the RFEF, as Spain will be playing a World Cup qualifier against Turkey on the same day. López has already sounded out some players, though he acknowledges that clubs are not obliged to release their players for this type of fixture.

A match that goes beyond football

For Gerard López, the significance of this match extends far beyond sport:

"It would be a match with an extremely strong emotional and political component," he admitted.

If confirmed, this fixture would not only demonstrate concrete support for Palestinian football, but also reflect Catalonia’s desire to give international resonance to its own identity claims. A clash that could leave a mark far beyond the pitch.
