After a historic season, Vincent Kompany warns against complacency. During the club’s Asian tour in Hong Kong, the FC Bayern coach made it clear that the team can only win more titles if it maintains the same hunger it had at the start of his tenure. For the Belgian, it’s not the quality of the players that matters most, but their mentality.

Bayern Munich is currently in Hong Kong as part of its Audi Summer Tour, where it is being enthusiastically welcomed by numerous fans. Amid public training sessions, sponsor events, and the upcoming friendly against Aston Villa, Vincent Kompany is already looking ahead to the challenges of the new season.

The 40-year-old made it clear what matters most now, following the successful previous season.

Kompany calls for the same level of ambition

“It’s not just about improvement; I think we still need to have the same ambition we showed on the first day. That hasn’t changed,” Kompany explained during a sponsor event in Hong Kong.

For the Bayern coach, it’s clear that despite winning the league title, the DFB Cup, and the Super Cup, his team cannot rest on its laurels. “We have to want to improve—that applies to our top players as well as everyone else on the team. And we have to want to win more titles and more games.”

Particularly noteworthy was his assessment of what ultimately matters in top-level soccer. “So it’s more about mentality than quality, and that mentality must remain the same.”

Aston Villa as the Next Litmus Test

Following the 2-1 victory over Jeju SK, Europa League champion Aston Villa now presents the toughest test of the preseason so far. The German national team players, including Joshua Kimmich and Manuel Neuer, are likely to see significantly more playing time than they did in South Korea, where they were initially eased back into action following their World Cup break.

The record champions will then return to Munich, where they’ll play additional friendlies against RB Leipzig and 1. FC Heidenheim. Finally, on August 22, the first competitive match of the new season—the Franz Beckenbauer Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund—is on the schedule.

Kompany has made no secret of the fact that FC Bayern intends to compete for every title again this season. Winning the Champions League is the top priority. However, the Belgian believes that his team’s mindset is the decisive factor in achieving this goal. His message to the Bayern stars is therefore clear: talent alone isn’t enough—the hunger for the next success remains crucial.
