Football League World's West Bromwich Albion fan pundit assesses whether Stuart Armstrong would be a good signing
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
West Bromwich Albion are battling with Sheffield Wednesday to sign former Southampton ace Stuart Armstrong ahead of transfer deadline day on Monday.
Both the Baggies and the Owls' interest in the Scotland international was first revealed by Football League World, while the future of current Albion midfielder Uros Racic is uncertain, as Italian outlet Tuttomercatoweb have reported that his parent club, Sassuolo, are weighing up whether to recall him.
Amid the Baggies' interest in Armstrong, FLW asked our West Brom fan pundit, Callum Burgess, if he would welcome the signing, should Tony Mowbray's men successfully land a deal.
Callum said: "If Albion are able to bring in Stuart Armstrong, then he'll definitely bring some additional quality into the side.
"Last season at Southampton, he was an impressive member of their squad, who was able to rack up more than 10 goals and assists during their play-off winning campaign.
"He's always been a player who's always got a bit of a spectacular goal in him, from his time at Celtic, just from there alone.
"And last season, he was getting some minutes following his time at Southampton for Vancouver Whitecaps, where he got an additional two goals and two assists as well there, so assuming he's been able to keep his fitness up there, and if he's still got the quality he showed during his time at Southampton, then I'd definitely be willing to take him, just for that additional quality alone that he's got.
"I do wonder what this means.
"If it means, for example, Uros Racic, does that mean he's going to be moving on?
"That'll mean that we've got the likes of (Alex) Mowatt, (Ousmane) Diakite and (Jayson) Molumby, who seem to be more defensive-minded midfielders, and then Isaac Price, John Swift and then Stuart Armstrong to take on more attacking roles in midfield.
"So, yeah, definitely (it) would be a good signing, I think."
As alluded to by Callum, the current Vancouver star produced real moments of quality during his stints with both Scottish Premiership giants Celtic, and Premier League outfit Southampton, and could be a strong addition for the Baggies, if they can beat Wednesday to his signature.
Last term, the 32-year-old produced a return of five goals and seven assists for the Saints, which helped them on their way to a Championship play-off final victory over Leeds United.
He subsequently notched two goals and two assists in just 10 MLS outings for Vancouver, which is indicative that he could still possess the sort of quality new Baggies boss Mowbray requires among his ranks, amid his efforts to guide the West Midlands club to a top-six spot come the end of the season.
