Serge Gnabry is back—and is immediately getting another chance to gain valuable playing time. Following his comeback in Bayern Munich’s 7-0 win over Union Berlin, the 31-year-old is heading to join the German national team. National team coach Jürgen Klopp has called up Gnabry to his expanded roster for the upcoming international break.
For the offensive player, the nomination comes at the perfect time. Gnabry had to sit out for months due to an adductor injury, which also caused him to miss the World Cup. Against Union, he took the field for Munich for the first time this season.
Even before kickoff, Gnabry made it clear to Sky that he is physically ready for his comeback. “I feel really good,” the Bayern star explained.
Instead of continuing to train individually in Munich during the international break, Gnabry can now make further progress in team training with the DFB. The 31-year-old sees this as a major advantage.
“For me, it’s a huge plus that he’s bringing me along and that I can stay in rhythm there,” Gnabry said of Klopp’s decision.
After several weeks of team training, the forward has been lacking, above all, match practice. That’s set to change now.
“I’ve been training for a few weeks now, but I haven’t played any minutes yet, so this is a great opportunity for me to keep training there and maybe even play. We’ll see how it goes. But I’m also just happy to be back with the DFB squad.”
This also marks Gnabry’s comeback with the national team. His most recent international match was in March, a 2-1 win over Ghana.

Klopp had already made it clear when announcing his roster that he wanted to keep Gnabry with the national team for the entire international break.
In addition to Gnabry, this also applies to Jamal Musiala and Nico Schlotterbeck. All three have had a difficult few months with extended periods of absence. The DFB now wants them to gradually build up their training and, possibly, playing time.
For Gnabry, therefore, the call-up is more than just a return to the national team. It offers him the opportunity to continue building his fitness and then, if possible, return to FC Bayern in top form.
His first appearance against Union will be immediately followed by the next step. And Gnabry himself makes no secret of how much he’s looking forward to being back on the field regularly with a team after his long forced break.
