A shocking incident occurred during a French U20 youth match between Racing Club de Toulon and FC Avignon at the Stade des Lices in Toulon.
According to reports from Ouest-France, a fight broke out between players at the final whistle after Toulon won the match. During the chaos, a man identified as the brother of a Toulon player came down from the stands and attacked young Avignon footballer.
The attacker stabbed the player in the thigh/groin area causing heavy bleeding and panic on the pitch. Emergency services quickly stepped in and transported the injured player to Sainte-Anne Hospital in Toulon.
Early reports say the player’s injuries are serious but not life-threatening.
Officials from both clubs reacted quickly to calm the situation and prevent the fight from spreading further. Witnesses praised the actions of the club staff especially those from Avignon who helped bring the situation under control.
One official from Toulon told local newspaper Var-Matin that the attacker used a knife and struck the player in a sensitive area causing a large amount of bleeding before medical help arrived.
Police later confirmed that two men were arrested including the suspected attacker and the player’s brother. Both are now being questioned as part of an investigation into violence with a weapon and involvement in the assault.
The suspect reportedly tried to flee after the attack but was later caught by police. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the exact circumstances and motives behind the assault.
The incident has shocked the French amateur football community, with strong condemnation from local football authorities.
The Mediterranean Football League & FC Avignon have both announced their intention to file official complaints.
