FIFA has withdrawn the FIFA Forward Enterprise project, an initiative championed by Gianni Infantino to create a company to manage some of the governing body's commercial assets and open the door to private investment.

FIFA said in a statement that the scheme aimed to strengthen member associations, especially those with greatest need. It had always been contingent on majority backing from federations after consultation with the FIFA Council, confederations and other stakeholders.

The proposal will not proceed. The governing body framed its purpose as uniting and improving.

The decision follows resistance from several confederations, including UEFA, Concacaf, the Asian Football Confederation and Conmebol, which had sought clarity on the project's scope, structure and governance and urged that football take precedence over any other interest.

Infantino now aims to rebuild dialogue across the game. He intends to convene stakeholders in the coming days and weeks to continue growing football everywhere, with a focus on countries most in need.
