Omar Marmoush is edging closer to completing a loan move from Manchester City to Tottenham. If Marmoush does leave City, they will need to replace the Egyptian international to provide cover for Erling Haaland and in an ideal world they’d sign a player who can offer more than simply being Erling Haaland’s backup. It has now been reported that City maintain an interest in signing Liverpool’s versatile forward Cody Gakpo. Manchester City’s reported interest in Gakpo does come as a surprise, but on first glance, it doesn’t seem like a move that could be possible for two major reasons.

David Ornstein and James Pearce have reported for The Athletic that Manchester City have an interest in signing Cody Gakpo from Liverpool. As per the Athletic report, City are yet to hold talks with Liverpool over a potential move for the Dutch international. It is also reported that Tottenham have a strong interest in signing Cody Gakpo.

Fabrizio Romano has reported that Liverpool will only sell Cody Gakpo if they can sign two wingers before the transfer window closes. PSG winger Bradley Barcola is Liverpool’s primary target out wide. It is also reported by Romano that Gakpo has previously agreed personal terms with Tottenham. Now, Manchester City have begun talks with Cody Gakpo’s agent. Lastly, Romano reports that Gakpo has a decision to make if Liverpool do decide to sell him this summer.

Before analysing what Gakpo could bring to Enzo Maresca’s squad, it doesn’t seem feasible that City could sign Gakpo for two reasons.

For now, it isn’t time to analyse what Cody Gakpo would bring to Manchester City. That time will come if City’s interest in signing Gakpo materialises. Is a City move for Gakpo possible? Perhaps not based on two factors.

First of all, the Athletic report states that Liverpool would likely demand over £75 million to sell Gakpo. That is a steep price to pay for the Dutch international. Manchester City does have vast sums of money to spend after selling a host of players this summer. What seems highly unlikely is that City would pay so much to sign Gakpo. However, that could change but it does seem improbable at this stage.

The other question is whether Liverpool would consider selling Cody Gakpo to Manchester City. The two teams have been fierce rivals both on and off the pitch for over a decade now. Raheem Sterling was the last player to move from Liverpool to City. But that move occurred a decade ago. Since then, the relationship between the two clubs has been non-existent. Unless Cody Gakpo pushes for a move to the Etihad, it is hard to see Liverpool selling the Dutch international to such a fierce rival.

Cody Gakpo has been named as a transfer target for Manchester City as they bid to add quality and depth to their attack. There are clear strengths that Gakpo would add to Enzo Maresca’s squad. But for now, it is a move that is hard to see coming together.
