Eddie Howe has admitted it was a “relief” that striker William Osula (22) remained at Newcastle United beyond the summer transfer window, after the 22-year-old’s proposed move to Eintracht Frankfurt collapsed late on deadline day.
Osula, who joined from Sheffield United in 2024, has since emerged as one of Newcastle’s most promising young forwards, impressing in recent weeks across the Premier League, Carabao Cup, and Champions League. His short cameo was especially crucial in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Fulham, where his late strike led to Bruno Guimarães’ 90th-minute winner.
With first-choice striker Nick Woltemade leading the line and Yoane Wissa sidelined by a knee injury, Osula’s resurgence has come at an opportune moment for Howe’s side.
“The next step was for Will to try and play regularly, so that was the aim with the Frankfurt move,” said Howe, as transcribed by BBC Sport. “But much to our relief, it didn’t happen. He’s vitally important now. He’s quick, athletic, and he’s starting to look like the complete package.”
Howe also praised Osula’s growing professionalism and influence within the dressing room. “He’s always had that big personality,” Howe added. “But now, when it’s work time, he’s serious about his development, and that’s been a big change.”
