A Sad Absence at Wembley: Jose Fonte Speaks From the Heart

Former Crystal Palace defender Jose Fonte's shared heartfelt tribute to his late friend and ex- Liverpool forward Diogo Jota who tragically passed away alongside his brother Andre in recent accident in Spain. The news comes just days before Liverpool face Palace in the Community Shield at Wembley.

A Friendship Beyond Football

Speaking to Crystal Palace’s official website, Fonte admitted he's still struggling to accept the loss.

"It’s still very hard to deal with the idea of Diogo & Andre being gone. I’m in pain every time I hear that news" he said.

He described his relationship with Jota as particularly strong, built on regular conversations not only about football but also about life.

"That’s why his passing has been so difficult for me" he added.

Remembering Both Brothers

While Fonte’s connection with Andre wasn't as deep, he praised the younger brother as talented player and wonderful person.

"Away from football, they were simply great people" Fonte said.

He recalled meeting Jota with the Portuguese national team remembering him as

"humble, always smiling and positive .. the kind of person you admire instantly"

A Loss Felt on and off the Pitch

Fonte stressed that no one could have foreseen such tragedy and urged that their memories be honoured.

"We must always do our best to remember them" he said.

Sunday’s Community Shield match will be played at 2pm GMT at Wembley Stadium. Fonte believes both sets of fans will have Jota in their hearts:

"It’s great occasion but sad that we won’t see Diogo in it. I’m sure the supporters will remember him from the stands"
